The article above is about a place where the residents put conservation first. Setting restrictions is not unusual for the Chesapeake Bay area, we restricted what people can build, how they can build, even the colors and styles...in historical neighborhoods. If we can do it for the past, why can't we do it for the future?
Local government officials are short-sighted. In terms of tax bases and real estate value, there is nothing that would increase the value in places along the Chesapeake than to put a halt to further development. Instead of encouraging the same urban-industrial slime that spreads from Boston to Dover, DE. the Chesapeake could become a jewel. Like pre-historic Alexandria, it could be a place of beauty, a place of scientific study and a national retreat.
Real estate used to be called speculation, it was considered a gamble, now it is considered guaranteed development. There is something seriously wrong here. Housing starts are no longer the indication of a booming local economy, they are the forerunner to run-off, ever increasing population and a dying local economy. It is not to late to make a difference.
