African Oil Palm Nuts

OK... Someone tell me the history of the African Oil Palm and whether or not the nuts were ever considered edible to the point that it would be regarded as a delicacy, a routine staple or even appear in cookbooks. Any information would be greatly appreciated... CJ Smith
