A deep and compelling topic that you have obviously given some thought. I like the responses to this proposal. The only idea or caution I would add is to consstruct your study to clearly distinguish between a few testable alternatives. Do we fear these animals themselves, or do they represent something that guns, knifes, etc. do not. Should your survey include questions about guns or ghosts as well as animals to determine if there is something intrinsic to the animals themselves? The real question here seems to be, what do we really fear when we fear a snake (or spider, or whatever).
I'm interested in seeing the results--Chris
