Draft 1: Project Mantid

This research topic submitted by Justin Beadle, Kevin Bechtel, Alex Kolakowski, Majida Al-Husaam, Lauren Dean ( j_beads@hotmail.com ) on 9/18/01 .

From articles we collected on Praying Manti we learned that during their first five weeks of growth the molt five times, once a week. After each molting they are a white color and change to the color of their environment. Our project will place the mantids in separate housing units, each lined with a different color construction paper, natural (brown and green), blue, red, yellow, and polka-dotted. We will observe the mantids to see if they are able to change to all different colors, or just the colors we have observed in nature, green and brown. We will record our color change observations using a digital camera, and in the end we will compare the photographs and judge the change in each mantid. We will also observe the mantids behavior and growth in the different environments and compare them.
