Effect of Canopies

Question:
Is plant variation affected by a tree canopy?

Introduction:
most obviously, this is relevant to the current environmental issue of the rainforest and the preservation of plant and animal species.
We also will make short reference to extremes of canopied/uncanopied environments (examples: the desert vs. tropical forests vs. arable forests)
some hypotheses: we are destroying our forests by intentionally creating uncanopied environments; plant variation thrives under a canopied environment as opposed to a non-canopied environment

Materials/ Resources:
resource- Western woods
materials-
light meter
stakes and string to rope of sampling area
metal sampling square
map of Western woods
species diversity index

Research Design:
actual lab-
1. go into Western woods
2. check map for specified sampling spaces (that our group will map out)
3. use metal square to take a random sample
4. use light meter to measure respective sample
5. use species diversity index to determine plant variety
6. (record it so we can use data)

that's all so far, please send questions/comments
ps. hays- thanks for your "constructive criticism"
