Depositional Environment of the Brookville Outcrop Draft #1
This article submitted by Lisel Shoffner, Erin Kalassay, Sandra Crawford on 9/24/97.
We plan to determine the depositional conditions that led to the creation of the Liberty formation of the Brookville, Indiana Highway 1 outcrop. To do this we will be documenting species diversity, orientation, and occurrence within the formation. Our sampling will involve a five foot wide column extending the length of the formation. Samples will be taken at 1 foot increments. Our equipment will include hand lenses, rock hammers, yard sticks (Jacob's Staffs and Brunton compasses), string, and marker stakes.
Knowing that Ohio was under a sea during the Ordovician, we expect to find the depositional environment to be one of deep sea, tropical conditions.
We will be visiting the outcrop several times to collect data. Each time we shall be analyzing and reanalyzing our data to help us determine what we will need to focus on in subsequent visits.
