Has The El Nino Really Caused Severe Weather Phenomenon in 97?

This weather topic submitted by Travis Franklin (MTFrank@Rocketmail.com) on 2/5/98.

Do we really blame all severe weather on the El Nino? That is a question I would like to address to anyone that has reason to believe that it is all coincidental and the reason for unseasonably warm or cold weather or severe weather is just a coincidence. The weather reports this year say that weather in most parts of North America is either going to be abnormally wet or dry. Is that not what weather forecasters say every year. I understand that hurricane Linda has been the strongest storm on record, but does that all do to the El Nino? There have been other storms in the past that have reached a category five storm. Is the El Nino really the cause of these severe weather Phenomenon?
