Strikeout in September!

This article submitted by Hays Cummins on 9/30/97.

Well, history has been made. The unprecedented strength of El Nino, 1997 has already made its inpact known on the Atlantic Hurricane Season. No Atlantic storms in September is a really unusual event!

MONTHLY TROPICAL WEATHER SUMMARY
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MIAMI FL
8 AM EDT MON SEP 1 1997

FOR THE NORTH ATLANTIC...CARIBBEAN SEA AND THE GULF OF MEXICO...

THERE WERE NO TROPICAL STORMS OR HURRICANES DURING THE MONTH OF AUGUST. THE ONLY OTHER YEAR THIS HAS HAPPENED...SINCE AIRCRAFT RECONNAISSANCE BEGAN IN THE ATLANTIC BASIN...WAS IN 1961. THAT YEAR ...SIX TROPICAL STORMS FORMED DURING SEPTEMBER AND FIVE OF THESE BECAME HURRICANES.

IT SHOULD ALSO BE NOTED THAT RECORDS AT THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER SHOW THAT THERE HAVE BEEN TROPICAL STORMS OR HURRICANES SOMEWHERE IN THE ATLANTIC BASIN DURING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER IN EVERY YEAR OF THIS CENTURY.

I wonder what the winter will bring!
