Prothonotary Close to Nest
Prothonotary Warbler- Protonotaria citrea
Prothonotary Warbler- Protonotaria citrea , Order PASSERIFORMES - Family PARULIDAE. I found a nesting pair of Prothonotary Warblers this morning. I thought this photo was interesting. These are incredibly beautiful birds. This male is checking out the suitability of the nest choice. It was a very rainy Sunday morning. But I was excited to get into the field to look for warblers in Heuston Woods. Despite the rainshowers, I was able to identify three species of warblers in the transitional forest near Sugar Camp in Heuston Woods State Park.

" A brilliant yellow-orange bird of southeastern wooded swamps, the Prothonotary Warbler is a striking sight. The Prothonotary Warbler is one of only two warbler species that breed in holes. (Lucy's Warbler is the other. Breeds in wooded areas near water, especially flooded bottomland hardwood forests, cypress swamps, and along large lakes and rivers. Winters in mangrove swamps and coastal tropical forests.)"
