HELP!!!

I am really bad about coming up with topics for research projects, mainly because I fear that I will spend so much time researching on in an area in which I am interested, only to find that I have wasted a lot of time. I am interested in studying El Nino, particularly how global warming and how increasing sea surface temperatures has affected it. I thought that I could find data on the number of hurricanes during an El Nino period, storm severity, and average rainfall. I thought I could link this information to rising sea surface temperatures to find out id there is some sort of connection to global warming and the severity of an El Nino period. However, my main concern is that I will not be able to find enough concrete information to make any conclusions because El Nino is a relativlely new phenomenon that has only been recently studied. What do you think?
