Climate Change Policy: Economic Influence (Draft 1)

This topic submitted by Adam Naylor, Alicia Loughry, Alec Risch ( awrisch1@aol.com ) on 1/23/02 .

Though scientific research may be responsible for bringing climate change issues to the political forefront, policy creation and administration relies heavily on economic and political factors. Some of the questions that we will be asking are as follows: Are economic and ecological interests mutually exclusive? Where is the balance between economic and scientific influence in ecological policy making? What are the specific methods by which industry influences the political process in regards to ecological reform?
Our research will be primarily composed of journal articles and websites that represent a range of perspectives. We hope to include not only ecological journals, but contrasting views of economics and politics as well. Largely, we will be looking at current domestic policy, but a background in domestic environmental policy is an obvious prerequisite.
We expect to find that industry forms large coalitions to influence legislation and policy. We also expect that the primary tool of industry is long-term economic prediction and scientific studies that support their goals. Science has fallen become a rhetorical weapon used by industry advocates and environmentalists alike.
