Emerald Toucanet Size: 11.5" (29 cm); 180 g. Diet: Many fruits, some insects, the occasional small lizard, and eggs or nestlings of other birds. Voice: Loud, far-carrying, saw-like: rrip rrip rrip rrip or curre curre curre curre, often for minutes at a time. Status: Common to abundant at middle elevations (above 2,600 ft), on both Pacific and Caribbean slopes. Cool Fact: Smallest and shortest-billed toucan in Costa Rica. Also the only one with a green body. Unless, of course, the blue-throated form (pictured here) is considered a separate species (Blue-Throated Toucanet, A. caeruleogularis). Emerald Toucanets are otherwise white-throated. In some places, the two forms are considered distinct and separate species; in other places, they are not. Source: (Stiles et al 248) |
