Black Guan
Chamaepetes unicolor

Size: 25" (64 cm); 950 g.

Diet: Fruit, taken both from trees and from the ground.

Voice: Usually silent. When startled, gives a deep ro-rooo or a groan-like kowr... Most noise made by this bird is not from its voice, but from crashing through the branches of trees.

Status: Common in remote areas of mountain forests, but scarce and wary where hunted.

Cool Fact: Nest is a pad of leaves and twigs, placed in a mass of epiphytes (possibly for camoflage?). Prefers to nest on large, low branches of cloud forest trees, only about 15 ft (4.5 m) above the ground.
