Gray-Throated Leaftosser Size: 6.75" (17 cm); 38 g. Diet: Ground-dwelling insects, spiders, other invertebrates, and tiny frogs. Hunts on ground, flipping over leaves and probing mud with bill. Prefers to forage in open spots, including trails. Voice: Soft sqeak: swick. Often done in repeating pattern of 5 syllables; 1 low, 2 high and louder, 2 weaker and shorter, then repeat. Status: Uncommon, found in wet middle elevations (2,000 - 5,000 ft), primarily on Caribbean slope. Cool Fact: Nests have been found in Trinidad, but there is no record in bird guides of nests found in Costa Rica. However, Hays Cummins might have found one! This picture fits the description of the nest : a burrow 12 - 18" deep in a vertical bank, often above a trail. Eggs are white, and kept on bed of leaf midribs in back of burrow.
