Great Curassow
Crax rubra

Size: 36" (91 cm); 4 kg.

Diet: Fallen fruits and small ground animals (invertebrates, or maybe small lizards?).

Voice: When disturbed, high-pitched, descending whistles: wheep wheet wheeeeeu. When very alarmed, runs away (not flying unless necessary) while yipping like a small dog. In mating season, the male calls with a deep, resonating hum.

Status: Formerly found on both slopes. Now scarce, but with good populations still in some national parks, including Corcovado.

Cool Fact: Found singly or in groups of up to 6.
