Green Violet-Ear Hummingbird
Colibri thalassinus

Size: 4" (10.5 cm); 5 g.

Diet: Flowers of many herbs, shrubs, epiphytes, and trees.

Voice: Sharp but low-pitched chut or zut. Also sings vigorous but not very musical phrase of 2 to 4 notes, e.g.: chip CHEET chut or CHEEP chut-chut.

Status: Common to abundant in highlands, particularly in areas where deforestation is greater.

Cool Fact: Sometimes territorial and defensive of flowers, but can be displaced by more aggressive species, such as Mountain Gems.
