Green-Crowned Brilliant Hummingbird
Heliodoxa jacula

Size: Male: 5" (13 cm); 9.5 g. Female: 4.75" (12 cm); 8 g.

Diet: Drinks nectar, primarily from candelabra-like flowers of Marcgravia vines (a type of epiphyte). Male somtimes defends large specimens of these plants. Female also drinks from understory flowers.

Voice: Loud squeak: kyew or tyew. Rapidly repeats call when agitated.

Status: Common resident, mainly on Caribbean slope, at elevations of 2,300 - 6,600 ft.

Cool Fact: Has unusually strong feet for a hummingbird, because it often perches to feed, rather than hover. When feeding from Marcgravia vines, it grips flower petals in order to perch.
