I plan to develop lessons and activities that will engage my students in learning about fish. This will fit in well with the study of various other living organisms. My class focuses on the value and interdepence of life and the comparison of the various groups of living things on the planet. In my classes I would like for my students identify the structure and function of the anatomical structures of fish. I also want them to be able to discuss specific adaptations of fish and how it makes them suitable for their role in the environment. I also plan to tie in ecological concepts in this unit including population dynamics with fish and how humans are impacting these population (overfishing, coral reef distruction, mangrove forest and estuary destruction/drainage).

I. Fish Unit Overview

A. Anatomy and Physiology
1. Perch/Mackrel Dissection Fish


B. Diversity of Species
1. Niche
a. Various roles of different types of fish play in their environments
b. Importance of fish to humans throughout history and today.
1) Fish symbolism
2) Fish & the economy
2. Student Research Report
a. Students will research a specific fish that interests them and will give
short oral presentation to class including visual aide/PowerPoint presentation.


C. Adaptations
1. Create a fish project
a. Students will be given a list of adapations (reproductive, sturctural, patterned, etc.) and will be required to create a fish using various materials showing these adaptations. They will make up a scientific and common name for their fish creation and will introduce this fish to their class explaining the implications of their adaptations.

2. Fresh vs. Salt water fish


D. Ecology of Fish
1. Population dynamics
a. normal fish reproduction and population fluctuations
b. overfishing and habitat destruction and its effect on fish populations (renewable resouce becoming a nonrenewable resource)
