An undeveloped uk invention is currently being looked at for low head hydropower inland, and tidal power along the uk coastline
As the major use of energy in the uk is for heating and hot water, the use of this technology could be more beneficial for driving heat pumps - with heat extraction from the sea - than for electricity generation.
