Conservation and Population Ecology of Bahama Abaco Parrot

Paper will be giving an overview of the endangered Bahama Parrot (2 sub-populations still exist on Abaco and Inagua) as well as the implications of having such low numbers of the species left (population ecology significance). The conservation of such a rare species is a small step to the global outlook of conservation and preservation into the future.

I. Introduction Ð Overview of species

A) Morphology Ð Distinctions from other parrot species
Due to Gene Flow/Founder Effect/Allopatric Speciation (Hypothesis)
B) Habitat (Past and Present) - Adaptations
C) Habits & Behavior Ð Diet

II. Population Status

A) Population status/numbers (Past and Present)
B) Distinction between Abaco and Inagua Populations
B) Hypothesis as to reason for decline

III. Population Ecology Significance

A) Genetic Drift - Bottlenecking
B) Allele Frequency
C) Heterozygosity decrease
D) Effect on future populations
