Tropical Field Courses -Western Program-Miami University

I have always been curious about jellyfish when I am on vacations and see them lining the beaches. Summer time in the Bahamas is considered jellyfish season. I am going to discuss the common jellyfish found in the North Atlantic areas we will be doing our snorkeling, so we can keep a look out for them. I hope to give a lot of good knowledge about jellyfish, focusing on those that we will encounter throughout this course!

I. Jellyfish
a. History of Jellyfish including their Phylum and the many kinds of species
i. There are over 200 species!
ii. Cnidaria, present in all marine environments and some freshwater.
b. Most common jellyfish found in the ocean and where
i. Cassiopea xamachana are found in the Florida Keys.
ii. Jellyfish found in the North Atlantic and their annual blooms
iii. Most dangerous jellyfish is found in Australia

II. How jellyfish get their nutrients and breathe
a. Breathe through diffusion, explain this process of obtaining oxygen
b. Food and nutrients jellyfish intake.

b. There is increasing evidence that hot water immersion reduces the pain of a jellyfish sting.
c. Neutralize the venom

i. Urine will not be acidic enough but will help to relieve pain.
IV. Abundance of Jellyfish in the North Atlantic
a. Factors relating to the abundance
i. Climate
ii. Food availability
iii. Salinity

V. Body of jellyfish and composition
a. 95% water
b. Movement

VI. Conclusion
