This is a great Website, even though I may not be able to pronounce some of the words right. Hehehe. I do have to say that I learned a bit.
AND NO. During the period between May and October, the only Igloos you will see are styrafoam igloos. AND NO LAUGHING! There isn't enough hands on the earth to count how many times I have been asked,"Do you live in igloos?" or,"Do polar bears roam through your vilages?"

COMMON PEOPLE! I get asked that if I am down in the lower 49, and wile I AM UP HERE!! The only bear that came to my house was an angry black bear, that was spooked by a wildfire. Then it smashed our garbage shed. >:-( Bad Black bear, bad, go to your den! *being very wierd*:)

good to be on this page.human behaviour is complex-credit goes to brain size.altrism is genetically explained.what about when a mother feels-it is better to see the child gone rather than keep on struggling or suffering on one account or the other mainly due to social setup, illness etc.how does external stimulus interfere with genetically determined expression?what about variations in the stimuli eliciting variable responses from same individual?then what happens to the instincts?does training masks or alters genetically determined expression?once the dicussion is initiated on these lines there are lot of varied examples in the developing nations that are different from those from developed nations.

I am not going to question the authority of Mr. Thompson and Mr.Turk, but in the timetable that has been taken from: "MODERN PHYSICAL GEOLOGY, Graham R. Thompson Ph.D., Jonathan Turk Ph.D., Saunders College Publishing and the University of Alaska, Department of Geology" they say that the cenozoic is the mammals age.
I suppose that they mean that is the age when mammals appeared and not anything else, but this is not quite clear. Please note that mammals class is a very small part of the groups that live in the planet. This should be considered the arthropods age.

Dave S. - Tropical Marine Ecology participant 2001--I teach high school

Here is a wonderful message from Dave S. concerning his thoughts about Tropical Marine Ecology 2001. Thanks Dave!

Back to reality for better and worse. Back to the police state with a cop on every corner, a-holes cutting you off and giving you the finger, hostile looks, TVs blaring, Harleys roaring, air conditioners humming, all work all the time.

And for better, back to family and love, the comforts of home, the familiar, the secure.

But still, I've been having trouble getting my head fully back here. I'm still floating in crystal blue, dark blue, clear blue, bioluminescent blue, purple sea fans, golden Acropora Palmata, purple/yellow fairy basslets, waking up spinning from 2 bottles of Bacardi and Bernie and dominoes and Shortstop and "swimming" until 3:00, waiting in line for breakfast, eating egg chow and coffee, riding on the blessed flat bed truck, laughing at/with Lisa and Sean and Woycke til we get toManhead key or the sea wall and then finally waking up after ten minutes of swimming in the ocean watching a green sea turtle swim in stop action toward me and then away, or a huge sting ray amble gracefully over a pale calcium carbonate seabed...
... visions dancing on and on in a loop in my head.

I took the family down to the Aquarium this week to try to get a fish fix, but all the reef fish looked so gray and colorless. I guess the Northeast will do that to you.

Anyhow, thanks for the friendship and the laughs. And thanks for an incredibly invigorating two weeks. It was great to spend time fully awake and engaged: I think I sleep walk too much of the time.

--Dave S.

Scott W. - Grad Student: Miami Univ & Stanford--Marine Ecology Teaching Assistant 2001

A wonderful note from Scott concerning his recent experience in Tropical Marine Ecology--2001

Hey guys...

So while the rest of you are easing your way back into the cold pool of reality, I got up on Monday morning and trudged into work. Looking for some sympathy here.... not seeing any.... yeah, well anyway... what a great two weeks, huh?

Leaving all you guys was such a downer... all the way up to the moment that Pete dropped me off in West Palm Beach was cool... but that "after-trip"down is upon me for real (serious thing)....

These kinds of trips always do this to me. I absolutely love doing these kinds of things. Intense two weeks of bonding - it's very intense. It's very real. Only we're not in a real situation... and every year this temporary version of reality dissolves at the end of the two weeks and brings me down.

I realize (finally) after four years of making the trek and adventure down on San Sal that it's really not so much the adventure of marine ecology as it is the adventure of getting to know new and interesting people. It is truly revitalizing for me. It keeps my spirit up and reminds me, ever so bluntly, that the world is filled with amazing folks. I'm just so thankful to have had the opportunity to be a part of their lives for a bit; and to have been able to let them into mine...

Keep in touch guys....

Scott

Dennis Conrad ( badshot@juno.com) - OTCS, United States Navy Retired

Good Evening Sir,

Commissioned from December 1954 until September 1970 the Bahamian Field Station on San Salvador, Bahamas was originally the U. S. Naval Facility, San Salvador (sometimes referred to as NAVFAC San Salvador). I was stationed there from June 1967 until July 1968. I cannot tell you how wonderful it has been for me to be able to view the photographs of my first duty station and overseas home that are available on one of your websites. The vegetation has matured since then and the buildings have been painted different colors but for the most part the old NAVFAC looks nearly the same as it was when I left it over thirty years ago.

The largest building at the facility, and the one that houses your field laboratories, was the operational hub of NAVFAV San Sal. A quonset hut surrounded by a cinder block shell, this was part of the Sound Surveillance System or SOSUS network that formed an underwater early detection system againt the massive submarine forces of the communist Soviet Union. How many submarines were detected and tracked by NAVFAC San Sal over the years of her service is unknown, but those of us who served there were proud of our accomplishments.

From the photographs, it appears that nearly every building I knew back in the 60's is still there and in service. Conspicuous by its absence is the large movie screen that once dominated the large concrete slab outside the mess hall. Filled with park benches, that slab was our outdoor movie theater where I first viewed films such as "The Collector" with Terance Stamp and Samantha Eggar, and all of Clint Eastwood's Spaghetti westerns. Overhead we would watch satellites flying by in their heavenly orbits. Radio antenna towers were located near the top of the water catchment basin. It was there that I as a novice photographer took my first 35mm slides of Ospreys in their nests.

I have noticed that many websites that provide information about the Bahamian Field Station incorrectly identify the facility as a former Coast Guard Station. Perhaps the Coast Guard took it over when the Navy left in 1970, but for the first 16 years of its existence, this was a Naval Facility. I'm sure Capt. Bernie Storr who still lives on San Salvador would gladly verify this fact. Please set the record straight with your colleagues.

Thank you for the wonderful nostalgia trip I have been afforded through these photographs. I intend to visit your site often.

Sincerely,

Dennis R. Conrad

Just thought I'd comment on that little misleading thing. But as I said, I loved the site.

Your site was very interesting and complete, I did not however see any references made to the larger mammals such as the panthers and coyotes that still live in the wild and migrate thru the biological corridores between the rincon de la vieja, miravalles and tenorio volcanos, we have seen them at the miravalles volcano in the water sheds, we would like for you to come see for yourself and report on these important and endangered animals, please contact me if you are interested.

Andrew Taylor (ataylor@scar.utoronto.ca) - Toronto, Canada lab research agonizing over this decision for some assistant

I stumbled upon your website and was surprized and very impressed by the breadth of material your courses and research cover. I too have very broad interests. Having completed a Masters in plant molecular biology, I have desided to undertake a PhD in an entirely different field (vertebrate paleontology most likely). I have been agonizing over this decision for some time and was begining to think my broad interests were more a hinderance than a help. It's very encouraging to see a researcher and educator taking such a strong interdisiplinary approach...thanks.

Kyleigh Maevers (ky24_99@hotmail.com) - Missouri, a high school student

I have just recently visited the Florida Keys on a marine biology trip. Our high school from Missouri and another from Illinois went down there to study and we also received a 1/2 credit of marine biology if we pasted the final quiz over our labbooks and lectures. I received the 1/2 crdit, but that was basically the end of my marine biology career I am afraid. No colleges in Missouri give marine biology courses (from the ones I have looked at). But if you could find out some other information about marine biology I would greatly appreciate it. I have included my e-mail address. And let me know if you know any other information about the courses in Missouri colleges. I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you!

THE LAB CAME OUT GREAT BUT I AM TRYING TO FIND THE NAMES OF THE DIFFERENT SPECIES I HAVE FOUND AND I JUST CAN NOT FIND THEM ANY WHERE, I ONLY IDENTIFIED 2 SPECIES, A GRASS AND CLOVERS. IF YOU WOULD, PLEASE EMAIL ME ON WHERE I CAN GET INFORMATION ON THE IDENTIFICATION OF LAWN SPECIES ONLINE, IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Karen Hoskins (knpo5719@mail.idt.net) - Cincinnati, Ohio - Employee for the Cincinnati Zoo

I enjoyed your site but was bugged that the people providing information about Bonobos at the Cincinnati Zoo called them 'monkeys'. They are, in fact, Great apes. For the information of those students - monkeys have tails, apes do not. African monkeys have narrow nostrils, callous pads on their rumps and lack pre-hensile tails. New world monkeys have broad nostrils, some have alopecic (bald) spots on the outer portion of the base of their tails, while others have pre-hensile (grooved & bald like a hand and has gripping capabilities) tails.
I feel if you are going to educate people about the natural world, you should keep the info accurate.
Just my two-cents.

Karen Hoskins

Response from Hays Cummins: Thank you Karen. I agree. The students need this type of feedback. Because of the nature of the "web based project forum," mistakes have been and will continue to be made in the future. I look at this format as an evolving one where each student (in theory) will receive feedback from others. In fact, responses such as yours can help make the students' writings more accurate!

Thanks again, Hays

Dr. Cummins,

I am currently creating an interdisciplinary power point work station for an educational technology class. My partner and I have chosen the moon as our topic. Our target audience is 8th grade earth science students. Although your labs are more detailed than ours will be, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I wish my Astronomy class this summer had been similar to your lab exercises. I just wanted to let you know I enjoyed reading it, and it helped me to realize that our project is not impossible. Thanks for posting it!

Hays, my man, how's life!? I haven't spoken to you in a while so considering that I forgot where you office is and I no longer have your number, I thought this would be the best way to get in contact with you. I just stopped in this site to check out any new pictures from this past summer's trip to San Salvador. I couldn't beleive how many different people wrote to you. Outstanding. Your site not only provides quality information, but it provides a forum for an extremely diverse crowd to communicate about ecological issues. By the way, before I forget, I think you still owe me a beer from the basketball game last summer. I would definately like to meet you somewhere to catch up on thinks and collect on that debt of yours! I hope that all is well and look forward to speaking to you soon. Feel free to e-mail me at baxtda@muohio.edu. I'll speak to you later. By the way, are you looking for a G.A. for this summer's trip to the Bahamas or Costa Rica? If so, it would be something that I am sincerely interseted in!!! I look forward to hearing from you,
-dan
