For the Love of Nature: Biophilia and Ecological Values (draft 1)

In our research of biophilia, we will work from its definition as an innate sensitivity to and need to connect with nature (E.O. Wilson 1984). We will use our knowledge of biophilia to discuss biophobia (overwhelming, at times irrational, fear of natural phenomena) and attempt to explain the connection between human beings and the rest of the biosphere, focusing on the instinctual emotions and reactions that nature inspires within all of us. For our own research, we will collect surveys in which we ask participants to describe anticipated reactions to certain interactions with the "natural world" (i.e. wandering in a forest, finding a snake at one's feet). Possible references include WWW pages such as "Turns of Phrase: Biophilia" and "Biophilia Values Chart" and E.O. Wilson's article "What is Nature Worth?" from The Wilson Quarterly, Winter 2002.
