Research Question: How is popularity achieved and defined for adolescents and young adults in a social setting? Can it be defined by physical attributes, socio-economic standing, sex, race, and religion?

Predictions: The kids who have the means and the knowledge to make themselves physically beautiful will be seen as the most popular with in their social setting. There is a sense of defined social boundaries, and few individuals are willing to cross those boundaries.

Preliminary Research design: We would like to conduct research through observations and interviews with students at the middle school, high school, and college levels. Through our research we want to study cliques and how they are defined. We are interested how dress influences these cliques as well as popularity. We will test this by showing people pictures from magazines and our own photographs of different stereotypes and styles of clothing. We then ask them to label the person in the photograph and assign their social standing.
