Evil may be when we act against society in ways, as individuals, we may be tempted to act. It may be relevant to consider "sinful" situations in which, arguably, no one is hurt, vs. those in which others are hurt for personal gain.

You may also want to check out the a counter arguement to the typical sociobiological view in "Darwin's Lost Theory of Love." I haven't read this one yet, but one of the blurbs on the back cover reads:

"The idea that Charles Darwin himself believed that the final climb to human civilization required the enactment of a principle of moral conduct far above the "selfish gene" so prevalent in today's populare accounts comes as a surprise..."
