The evolution of homosexuality

According to the evolutionary theory, only those who are most "fit" will survive and therefore be able to reproduce for frequently and more effectively. So how are Homosexuals, a group of people who aren’t necessarily procreating at the rate of heterosexuals, still prevalent in our society? A society that for the most part frowns upon such a lifestyle. I would like to study shared traits among the homosexual community that might lead to a greater ability to survive. I have read a few studies that suggest that homosexuals might be more nurturing, or even more intelligent then heterosexuals (generally speaking). I would like to conduct my own study of the homosexual population at Miami and find recurring traits among them that might lead to a greater chance of survival in society. I will probably make a survey or a test for homosexuals to take. I will try to correlate grades and ‘success’ after college with the homosexual population at Miami.
