The imparative

I like the focus--it's hard to come by in philosophical investigations. I'd try to identify the internal and external forces shaping such imperative mindsets. It reminds me of when people say "He's a man of his words." Westerns always seem to play around with this theme, black-and-white moral codes. You might want to investigate images of the Law-man or the Law-woman. These seem to naturally conflict with, for example, parents that send messages that it's OK for kids to lie depending on the circumstances.

Another idea is to investigate how people who break a social imperative rationalize it by saying they were keeping a personal imperative, and vice versa.
