you might want to take into consideration that just as building oneself up is viewed as negative, also knocking oneself down (for compliments) is seen as negative. you might be able to research the reasons behind each behavior. also, if you are studying jealousy and beauty, one topic for consideration could be the social rules and constructs society has put forth- why some ways of presenting oneself are looked down upon, for example, a person who is good looking and dresses to show off their physical attractiveness may be labeled as cocky, a jerk, whore, etc. is this because we are afraid of someone who is perceived as better looking than ourselves?
