These are Research Proposals for "What is Human Nature?" Spring 2005. Each research team is to submit their own interdisciplinary research proposal. Each proposal should be a minimum of 5 pages.

Remember: Look at the "What is Human Nature?" Syllabus to for details on the specifics to be included in your proposal. Make sure it is complete! Use the following as a guide!

1. Introduction

  1. What is/are your specific hypothesis(es)? Is your proposal interdisciplinary? Is your proposal interdisciplinary?
  2. How does your proposal address a fundamental issue of human nature? b. What do you plan to accomplish?
  3. . Relevance. How does your research connect with other aspects of our Nature of Human Nature course? Look at the syllabus to get a sense of perspectives and issues to be covered in the course.

2. Relevance of your Research Question

    (A) Literature Review--What have others done? Place your work in the context of the literature
    --a minimum of 12 book/Journal references. Be sure to include a brief explanation as to why you selected each source.
    --a minimum of 5 website references that are pertinent to your study.
    Also, be sure to include a brief explanation as to why you selected these specific websites.

    (B) How does your research relate to a larger question? Spend considerable time putting your research question(s) into a much broader context. This "context" should be developed so as to serve as the foundation of your work.
3. Interdisciplinary Approach (including cultural, social and scientific perspectives)
4. A Specific Research Design
**What is your experimental design? Be specific. What will you be measuring and why? How will your measures address your specific research questions? --Include a specific sampling design for each method. Make sure each method is statistically sound.
--What are you social and cultural dimensions components of your study? Will you be surveying people? interviewing? If so, include your interview/survey instrument.

5. Materials and Methods

  1. Describe important materials and how they will be used.
  2. How will your research team work with each other (within a team) to "make your project happen?"
  3. Have you considered what statistics you will use in your scientific analyses?
  4. Have you included a Data Sheet?
  5. Include a specific time-line of research execution

6. Results (To be included in your final report, but, if you've got some now, why not include them?)

  1. Observations (journal, reflections, etc)
  2. Images and videos
  3. Statistical Results and comparisons
  4. Tables (numerical data) and figures (graphs, drawings, etc.) when appropriate

7. Discussion & Conclusions In your final report

  1. Interpret your results, explaining why you got the results you did.
  2. How does your system compare with the other two study sites?
  3. Think beyond the project. What additional questions do you have?
  4. What suggestions do you have for further investigation?
  5. How do the scientific, social, and cultural dimensions of the project relate to one another?
