For the NS 1 final project, we plan to study the natural lichens found on Western Campus and to prove whether or not a natural aversion to more polluted areas (ie the side of US27) exists among them. By studying the natural growth of lichens on several trees of a specific species (yet to be determined), some in secluded areas and some along the highway, we expect to find a drastically lower number of lichens growing near automobile polluted roads.
