Draft 1: Human Behavior with Relation to the Lunar Cycle

This topic submitted by The Lunar-Mooners: Kate, Danielle, Lauren, Megan, Lauren (mauskm@muohio.edu) at 9:26 pm on 9/27/99. Additions were last made on Wednesday, August 9, 2000. Section: Cummins

1. Introduction

a. Purpose/Problem. What is your hypothesis? Our purpose is to determine if there is a relationship between the phases of the moon and human behavior, taking into account birth rates and crime rates. Our hypothesis is that the moon does in fact have an effect on human behavior.
b. What do you plan to accomplish? We want to prove that our hypothesis is true.
c. Relevance, if any. Why is this research interesting? This idea is normally associated with a myth and the goal of this lab is to bring mythology to reality.

2. Relevance of your research question

a. Literature Review--What have others done? In reviewing others works, we were able to narrow the topic down so we could focus on birth rates and crime rates. We also discovered flaws in other research labs. We have taken note of these flaws so that we will not reproduce them in our research.
b. How does your research relate to a larger question (like the real World)? This is a real world topic because each day we are confront with different behavior patterns.

3. Materials and Methods

a. What is your experimental design? Is it statistically sound?
Research will be conducted in the categories of birth rate and crime rate. Calls will be made to selected area hospitals and police stations to obtain this information.

b. Describe important materials and how they will be used. A survey will be issued to selected people within the Western community. Each member of the lunar-mooners will ask six people in total, three males, and three females, some of which will include a teacher of each sex. A calendar of the lunar cycles guides us as to when the surveys will be issued and the information gathered. Two days before and after each stage of the moon (first quarter, full moon, third quarter, and new moon) the survey will be conducted.

c. Describe other methods. How will you involve the class in your study? Group discussion will be held to introduce the statistics that we have gathered thus far. After the discussion, issues may be addressed as to the class's general opinion.

d. Have you included a Data Sheet? Our data sheet is a hard copy of the survey we will administer to the select community so that we can form an overall conclusion. We will also have an accurate calendar stating the precise phases of the moon. At the conclusion of our lab, we will have a consensus of the surveys and statistics.

e. Include a specific time-line of research execution. Our time-line of research begins on September 30 with the first survey, in co ordinance to the third quarter of the moon. The research will conclude on December 2, which is two days after the third quarter moon on November 30. Within this time, we will have collected research from the selected hospitals and police stations.
