Why does lettuce tast like gasoline now?

I am 52 in fairly good health I had a by-pass (intestional)when I was 23. Last year I had a viral infection that left me B-12 deficient and can not get rid of my uritic acid, but the thing that has last and sometimes is so bed is that lettuce tastes like gasoline some fried foods taste rancid and every thing smells wrong. My Dr. is stumped and really does't know why .. Do not get me wrong a diagnoses is not what i am looking for I just would like to pointed in the right direction or is old age getting the best of me?
