A Novel Approach

This is an interesting idea that has the potential to be quite good. However, this proposal does not do everything that we discussed orally, so it is difficult for me to assess where you are right now. The scientific study proposed is not very well developed, and it is not at all clear how it relates to the other aspects of the idea (other than that the IES graduate student character is doing the research). Perhaps you could make a theory of his or hers about reducing sediment more central to the story.

There is also a hint hear that the character is going to lament the duck pond dam as a sin against nature. This would weaken the story because such a position would be quite naive. On this campus alone, there are many small culverts that have been put in pipes underground and mowed over, or replaced by storm sewers under the streets (go to the north side of the cemetery on Chestnut St. in Oxford and see what happens to that culvert, which is bigger than the duck pondŐs, when it crosses Chestnut on the other side of the street).

The sources you site are not very scholarly, although I like the idea of building upon previous research by Western students.

When we return from spring break our field trip to Indian Creek, and our visit with Jim MacCartney should be quite helpful in helping you solidify your proposal. We will make class time for you to work with Jim, and I urge you to make the most of this excellent opportunity. -Chris
