Collins Run A: Hays' Response

This topic submitted by Hays Cummins (haysc@muohio.edu) on 3/8/02.

Hello,

Let me first commend you on your proposal--it's pretty well structured and you appear to be organizing your thoughts and focus.

Here are some suggestions and comments:

  • Include a map of Collins Run with the locations of your sampling sites. Collins Run is an interesting system that flows through several neighborhoods. Did you know that just upstream of the Bluffs, the Creek is adjacent to a now closed landfill? I wonder if landfill run-off is a problem?
  • For the scientific tests that you plan on using, I'd like to see more details as to why and how these tests have been used by other studies of aquatic ecosystems. Why these tests and not some others? This is where the literature comes in handy! Use it!
  • Speaking of literature, it looks like you have some good book sources and websites. The next step is to integrate your literature into the body of your work! At this point, the literature is "standing on its own" decoupled from your work.
  • There are plenty of primary literature sources from journals. I'd like you to expand your literature base and include some of these sources. Use Ohio Link or the Science Article Database (a vast source of interesting articles in PDF format). This database can be accessed on the Rivers Proposal Page!
  • Last semester, a NS1 research team examined fish populations in Collins Run. You are welcome to incorporate their data into your study.
  • And finally, your historical and soical aspects of your study don't appear to be well developed yet. It's coming, but,.....more needs to be done.

So,....let me know how I can help.
