SUMMARY:

Our group examined ways humans have affected Four Mile Creek watershed. First off, we studied the physical changes humans have made to the creek and the area around the creek from a historical perspective, including the Hueston Woods/Acton Lake region. We also studied the biodiversity of the creek and how the changes humans have made have affected the biodiversity of the creek. We expected low biodiversity to show an indicator of poor stream health. Our project is interdisciplinary because examined the biodiversity as an indicator of stream health as well as gaining a cultural and historical perspective of uses of the creek. We also conducted an interview with the apprentice Hueston Woods Naturalist. This interview was to show a park service perspective as well as to gain knowledge of how the Nature Center at Hueston Woods makes use of the river. Creative elements of our project include a web page design that accompanies the final report, photos taken in the process of carrying out research, and analysis of cultural elements pertaining to riversÑa film and a movie from that film that uses a river as an explicitly cultural and spiritual reference.
