Hi Erica:

This will be an interesting subject to investigate. You might want to examine the relationship between native peoples and the environment generally and then look specifically at how local tribes related to 4-Mile. Did the stream have religious significance, for example? How was it used? Did their activities have any impacts at all on the quality of the stream? If so, what were these and how do we know?

Once you have specified a question, you can bring in cultural history, land use patterns, relationships with the natural world and specualtions on how pre-European practices impacted the quality of stream water (nutrients, sediment load, habitat, morphology, etc.).

You might want to contact the history department to see what has been written in this area. Philip R. Shriver has published many papers on regional history and his works would provide a good introduction for your study. At any rate, be certain to include a question or questions about the creek as a natural resource.
