The habitat-level approach described in Harper and Everard's article may augment your project. Habitat assessment that integrates physical, hydrological, chemical, geomorphological and ecological perspectives functions as "an effective surrogate for biodiversity assessment" (Harper and Everard, 1998, p.401). More specifically, identifying "functional habitats" is a tool that allows linking biodiversity with physical controls on river system structure (Harper and Everard, 1998, pp.402-403). Also, this method of habitat assessment allows assessment of a river's natural and socio-economic values, including the support water and habitat quality offers for both human and non-human use (Harper and Everard, 1998, p.406).
