Four Mile Creek's impact on people over time seems like a valid approach. I think in order to accommodate the sciences in this you might look at impact of the knowledge that has been gained from studies of 4mc on people. The founding of the Four Mile Creek conservation trust -- Now the Three Valley Conservation Trust was predicated on the impact of the river on people. Valuing is something that people do, but it is sometimes an ethical response to a subject that cannot speak for itself--like a stream, a stand of trees, or a mountain.
