The commodification of Four Mile Creek

This topic submitted by Bethany Weber ( weberbh@muohio.edu ) on 1/23/03. [ Rivers Team: Bethany Weber-Section: Garrison/Green]

The concept of the Commons is a very intriguing. I want to research the history of Four Mile Creek. In this research i want to focus on how the creek has changed and been affected by human development. Especially focusing on the dams that have been put in place. When did people start to take control of the creek? What made them believe they had the right to change the creek? When did the creek become a commodity instead of a commons to this area? I also want to research the idea of the commons with in different cultures, specifically the Native American people who inhabited this area.
I want to test the quality of the water in the creek before and after the dams to see how this human influence on the water has effected the water. Lastly, I want to see if there was any literature written about this area and four mile creek, to see if there are any discriptions of the creek water before the dams were put into place.
