Now that I have thought about your idea a little more, I am much more intrigued. If you are examining the ecosystem around the creek it could be interesting to look at the redox potential of the creek, which Harper and Everard talk about in their section entitled "Chemical Factors and Habitats." Rivers can play a very important role in cleaning up pollution in their environment through natural processes depending on the biodiversity of the river and it's biota. It might be interesting to look at a part of the creek near business or farming (i don't really know much about what surrounds the creek)and see if it could possibly have had any effects on the pollution levels (especially air or soil pollution), instead of looking at how pollution has affected the river. I don't know if that made any sense. I was just really fascinated with that idea in this article, and thought it could be a good way to see how a river has affected (and possibly helped out) it's surroundings.
