In Loving Memory

I like this proposal very much. As I began to read the proposal I kept waiting to hear an overarching question or issue you would be examining. There is not one, but perhaps the story itself serves in its place. Still, most children's books have a lesson or moral they are trying to get across to children. You might keep this in mind as you do your research.

A couple of other points.

You need to make clearer what age group your story is aiming for. Children can include any girl or boy from age three or four through age eleven or twelve. What you can incorporate into your story and how you craft it will vary greatly depending on the age group for which you are writing the story.

Writing a children's story is not a simple accomplishment. I am sure there must be a lot of literature on the art and craft of writing a children's story. You should become acquainted with some of this literature. That would make your project even more interdisciplinary than it already is.

Depending on what age group you are writing for, you might want to consider a service-learning aspect to your project---that is reading the story to children at the Day Care Center on the Western Campus. This would allow you to see what works and doesn't work both in terms of story line and science.

Again, depending on the age of children you are writing this story for, you might want to talk to Don Kaufman in the biology department who has written a number of environmental text books for young children. Chris Myers would also be a good resource, although that would have to be done through e-mail.

Good luck.
