Progress Report April 10, 2003

Our group met this morning to go over our individual progress and to organize thoughts for our paper, and the presentation. Grace, Erica and I (Maureen) met in GraceÕs room to look at the quick time file of the 70Õs commercial with the crying Native American. We are still not sure if we will be able to format it to be larger, however, the commercial shows this Native AmericanÕs lament for the increasingly damaged environment. This gives us a cultural outlook that will be very useful in showing how respectful the Native AmericansÕ were for their surroundings, and can also be interpreted along the lines of burial mounds, and why Native Americans would have been so careful in choosing locations for the mounds.
Yesterday (Wednesday), Erica went to the special collections library and found some good resources for our presentation and the paper. We are all planning on meeting there on Wednesday April 16, to further the research on the cultural aspects of the mounds. Grace found some more helpful sources online, and we also found out that a book that Ryan Lazowski has will help our project a great deal. I have been researching in MiamiÕs reserves to find some legislation laws, and also online to find federal protective laws concerning Native American burial mounds. These will show the social standards put forth to protect the natural environment and the history and culture that is evident in Native American burial mounds.
We plan on beginning the writing process next week after our research is concluded. We are meeting this weekend to get our research organized and compacted so that we have relevant information and since we will all be writing individual parts of the paper, we donÕt want to be redundant with our information.
