Peer Review is a fundamental component of doing science.To help make your projects more scientifically sound, you are being called upon to put forward your ideas, proposals, lab packets and final report as well as provide feedback to your peers.

Remember: Look at the Rivers: An Interdisciplinary Perspective Syllabus to for details on the specifics to be included in your proposal. Make sure it is complete! Use the following as a guide!

1. Introduction

  1. Purpose/Problem. What is/are your specific hypothesis(es)? Is your proposal interdisciplinary?
  2. What do you plan to accomplish?
  3. Relevance, if any. How does your research connect with other aspects of our Rivers Course?

2. Relevance of your Research Question

    (A) Literature Review--What have others done? Place your work in the context of the literature
    --a minimum of 12 Library/Journal references. Be sure to include a brief explanation as to why you selected each source.
    --a minimum of 5 website references that are pertinent to your study. Make sure the URLs are "Hot" links in your proposal posting (see instructions below).
    Also, be sure to include a brief explanation as to why you selected these specific websites.

    (B) How does your research relate to a larger question?
3. Interdisciplinary Approach (including cultural, social and scientific perspectives)
4. A Specific Research Design
**What is your experimental design? Be specific. What will you be measuring and why? How will your measurers address your specific research questions? --Some examples of scientifc measurements include: stream flow and discharge at low and high water; sediment load; a physical characterization of your watershed (area, land use, potential water input, etc); a physical characterization of the geomorphology of your stream (sediment size, frequency of ripple zones, pools, index of "meandering"; biodiversity of a specific group of organisms (fish or invertebrates); water chemistry parameters, etc.
--Include a specific sampling design for each method. Make sure each method is statically sound.
--What are you social and cultural dimensions components of your study? Will you be surveying people? interviewing? If so, include your interview/survey instrument.
--Each landscape has a history. Have you included the history of your watershed in this proposal?

5. Materials and Methods

  1. Describe important materials and how they will be used.
  2. How will your research team work with each other (within a team) to "make your project happen?" Be specific! Also, how will your team interact with your specific ecosystem co-research team?
  3. Have you considered what statistics you will use in your scientific analyses?
  4. Have you included a Data Sheet?
  5. Include a specific time-line of research execution

6. Results (To be included in your final report, but, if you've got some now, why not include them?)

  1. Observations (journal, reflections, etc)
  2. Images and videos
  3. Statistical Results and comparisons
  4. Tables (numerical data) and figures (graphs, drawings, etc.) when appropriate

7. Discussion & Conclusions In your final report

  1. Interpret your results, explaining why you got the results you did.
  2. How does your system compare with the other two study sites?
  3. Think beyond the project. What additional questions do you have?
  4. What suggestions do you have for further investigation?
  5. How do the scientific, social, and cultural dimensions of the project relate to one another?
