WEEK EIGHT (Apr 5-9)

Assignment: Read Dragonfly Living in Space and Houses issues and Teacher’s Companions. Read Finding the Way and Houses booklets in A Field Guide. Try the Special Technology Challenge.

Special Technology Challenge for the Teacher

As a way of getting started on the living in space theme, try reviewing some educational software related to living in space. Look for software in your school related to space, or contact Inquire Ohio’s Cyber-librarian for ideas. You may contact the Cyber-librarian by sending e-mail to the Inquire Ohio Resource Finders at help@waterconnections.org and tell them what themes or issues you want to explore with your students. The librarian will research your request and respond with a personalized message of suggested media and advice. Order the materials on-line, and they’ll be shipped to you the same day. Or ask the librarian to search again to meet your needs.
As a starting point, here are some recommended titles of software for you to review

Space Shuttle -This program puts students in the role of shuttle crew member. It includes short "training video" segments on living and working in space.

The Great Solar System Rescue -Here, students assume the roles of astronomer, geographer, meteorologist, and historian while working to find missing space probes.

Planetary Taxi -In this one, students "zoom through a scale model of the solar system at the wheel of [their] own cosmic taxicab."

Now, try this: Come up with your own checklist or criteria sheet for reviewing software. Include students in the review process and the creation of the checklist, if you wish.

Where and What do I post to the World Wide Web?
