Of the five different methods of assessments, I use the first four.
#1: Student Self-Assessment and Feedback. After we have finished a science unit, I like to give the students a self-assessment paper regarding the unit. This really helps to find out if I am "on-track" with my methods of teaching. I also really love to read their feedback.
#2: Authentic Assessment. When we are working in our cooperative groups on "hands-on" projects, I question each student on different aspects of the experiment. It gives me a much better understanding if the student understands the purpose of the experiment. Also, some students have a hard time expressing their thoughts on paper and do better orally.
#3: Portfolio. This is an excellent way for the student, parents, and teacher to see growth in the student's work. When comparing, brainstorming, notes, data sheets, graphs, and observations from early in the year and on, there is a major difference in the student's work. It is impressive to see the improvement.
#4: Pretest, Intervention, Posttest. This has always been a solid way to evaluate. It is straight forward and not as subjective as other methods of assessment. I only use this method on certain units.
The Controlled Comparison is a method that I have never heard of before this. I'm not sure if I would use this with elementary students. I would need more information on this before I would attempt this method.
