I did Flight Inquiry 1 with my students last week. There was an amazing amount of energy, noise, and thinking in my room. The students were even willing to forfeit recess time to get in extra experimenting time.
This was an inquiry lesson because it gave the students an opportunity to actively seek answers to questions they were interested in. This inquiry inspired questions, answers, and more questions.
I did make one change to this inquiry lesson. Before we went to the computer lab, we began a K-W-L chart to take with us. In the K column the students listed what knowledge they already had about the Wright brothers and flight. Under the W column they listed what they wanted to know about the Wright brothers and flight. As the inquiry progressed the students listed what they had learned under the L column. This activity made a nice summary of the whole project that we could put by the principal's office for everyone to see.
I made this chart for one reason. My students are familar with using the chart to document their current knowledge. The W column gives them an opportunity to organize what they want to learn. The L column helps the students summarize what they have learned from this inquiry.
I believe this change kept the lesson an inquiry based lesson. The change is simply a reflection of my personal teaching style.
