Using a Video to Introduce a Lesson

I used the televised flight inquiry lesson as an introduction to my lesson. I
informed the students that it was originally a live broadcast but because of our snow
days, I had taped it. I used the pause button several times to allow my own class to
answer the teacher’s questions. I then selected the theme video clips to initiate class
discussions about further flight concepts. Since we did the night dreams activity, I made
sure I had Virginia Hamilton’s book out and in view when they watched that particular
video clip. I didn’t mention the book at first and the looks on their faces were priceless
when they recognized that the neat video effects matched the book’s cover.
I think the videos are very flexible in a classroom. The inquire clips were
designed for introductions to lessons and they work very well. I also like to use videos to
review and put closure to a unit.
Just a thought....has anyone ever made classroom videos made by students to
introduce an idea which could be used with next year’s class?
