I've always considered myself to be an expert on atmospheric sciences. One day, a student asked a question during a class discussion that I was unble to anwswer without a high degree of Bull S. I stopped and realized that I needed to "let go" of the need to have all of the answers. I said to the class "I don't know the answer to that question" but we can find out. The class was shocked and seemed a little let down at first.
My admission to the class helped me become a better teacher. It was OK not to know everything even in an area that you think you are very knowledgable in! The students saw me as a "learner" and a far more interesting individual. My uncertainties helped them to learn as well!
All the best,
